Being asked to design an opera at Teatro alla Scala is quite something, when it is Robert Carsen on the other end of the phone it is something quite special. ‘La Fanciulla del West’ was my second collaboration with Robert Carsen after ‘The Turn of the Screw’ in Vienna in 2011 and proved to be quite the phenomenal experience. Due to the late commissioning of the piece this meant we only had a short design period before presenting the concept to the Intendant Alexander Pereira and the Conductor Riccardo Chailly. Once the concept was signed off the in-house workshops had to offload some of the scenic construction to other companies to cope with the workload in such a short space of time. (You can read more of this in my blog).
Having collaborated with Robert Carsen before I have had the opportunity to experience first hand his professional interaction with the singers and musicians alike. Robert has a very disarming nature about him and with all the immense success still retains a passionate enthusiasm and enjoyment in tackling new projects and pursuits. We are currently developing our third collaboration for Teatro Real Madrid in 2019. (More details to follow soon).
