What do you get when you put together a country’s most famous artist, composer and rock band? ‘Penelope X’, Riotous Company’s first musical set to the Greek drama of Odesyus with music composed and conducted by Nikola Kodjabashia featuring Macedonia’s rock band Foltin This was a new commission by Macedonia Opera and Ballet to show off the talent and skills of one of its native musical prodigies, though Its main challenge lay in the fact that the music was still being finished whilst rehearsals were underway. Therefore designing the sets and costumes had to stay fluid up until the last minute because as the piece was being written, characters changed, were cut or new ones added taking the story in different directions.
Riotous Company only works on newly devised pieces and since I am one of its founding members I am well versed in the challenges a project of this nature presents, so it came as no surprise when everything was so last minute. As a testament to the unending drive and passion of the theatre workforce (given the economic and political condition of the country), ‘Penelope X’ was a huge success and on its world premiere saw audiences over crowd the theatre, seating on stairways, aisles and standing at the back to get a glimpse of the show.
