I was invited by Arthur Pita to design the set and costumes for his latest choreography ‘Run Mary Run’. This was a new creation commissioned by Sadlers Wells to form part of a triple bill entitled ‘Osipova’ after the lead dancer Natalia Osipova. The triple bill featured new pieces by Sidi Larbi Cherkaui, Russel Maliphant and Arthur Pita and received its world premiere at Sadlers Wells on the 29th June 2016. It will be performed again as part of the Edinburgh Festival and then tour in New York before returning to Sadlers Wells later this year.
Arthur Pita’s refreshing and theatrical approach to choreographing made ‘Run Mary Run’ a great first collaboration. I found his attention to detail, keen observation and professional methodology inspiring and rewarding. The set design concept presented some challenges technically due to the touring nature and the running order of the piece in the triple bill but the technical staff at Sadlers Wells were very professional and embracing of the challenges which paid off. It is not every day that one gets to design and produce costumes for Natalia Osipova the Prima Ballerina of the Royal Ballet and Sergei Polunin the ‘Enfant Terrible’ of the dance world but it was a delight working with this couple whom were both very committed and dedicated.
